Avoid unwanted house insurance claims this winter

Frigid temperatures and mounds of snow can wreak havoc on houses, so take time and do regular maintenance to avoid unwanted insurance claims.

It is also important to know your insurance coverage because not all policies cover ice damming or burst pipes. Make sure to talk to your broker if you have questions.

Here are a few winter house maintenance tips:

1. Test and maintain smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.

2. Ensure furnace, wood stove and any other heating sources are in good working condition.

3. If you go away on vacation, even for a few days, leave the heat on and have someone you trust check on your home while you are away.

4. Run water through all plumbing fixtures regularly and test plumbing shut off valves.

5. Inspect your attic for frost accumulation and check your eaves troughs and roof for potential ice dams or icicles.

6. Keep your sidewalk and front stairs of your house clear of snow and ice.

7. Keep snow away from basement windows, gas meters and exhaust vents.

8. Prevent freezing of pipes by fitting exposed pipes with insulation sleeves or wrapping.

9. Take steps to prevent snow from building up on your roof.
